Our Bloggs!
Today we had a talk about how we were doing with our Bloggs and if they looked good or not. I do not love writing but once I get into it and enjoy the topic I really like reading about it. We are still on the maps and having to finish them making sure they look good and are easy access for us when we need them. I like being able to do maps because I am not very good at my continents and knowing my states and places like that. Using these maps help me better understand places and where and why they are there. I also like making a key either on or the back of the map to help me better understand the map and where they are. I like learning all these new things and things i'm not good at especially. We also learned there are all different maps even some are upside down!! I like doing things I can see Visually and can easily process. I enjoy doing these blogs also because it helps me express everything I learned without answering questions and just full on explaining it all. It helps me plan out things and make sure that it all makes sense. I also like how I can also ask questions that other students have and we can all answer them through our blogs by looking them up or by reading the Blogs and getting new information by doing that. This class period was very nice and enjoyable because I was able to finish my map and better understand what I had been learning through this.

What areas are on the map and where are they located.
Maps are confusing me very much and each day we learn how many different kinds of maps there are and how not all of them are correct. We had learned all the good things about the map and what places are in the right spot but mostly on how not good things are. Certain places on there are called certain things for a reason. We think of them as places but a lot of these places have certain backround history. I still do not get why there are maps faced backwards and upside down but we are still finding new ways to make these maps. Certain places on the map show us if we are able to know the time zones or not. I also learned from the maps of some of where my ancestry was from and how they came about on certain foods and religion. How are we supposed to trust these maps on where to be if it is flipped upside down or they say one area is bigger than another when really its smaller so wouldn't we get lost if we are looking for one thing and can't find it due to poor direction. We use direction everyday and one wrong way and we are lost or are in the wrong place. Today we wrote down places on the map that we know of and I leaned a new thing about the oceans and where they are all at.

No maps are accurate!
How can this be is my main question how can we be told that the earth is round and that certain Staes or country aren't really that big. How can this be? With all this technology and research we know why can't we figure this out? I want to know how we are able to make up theory sayin that we can just make it upside down or we can change the shape when it is flat on paper. Will we ever get to know the answer are we able to see the truth on if the world is actually like a clock? I do know that maps can give us great direction and help us when we are lost and don't know an address or place. What if emotion happens or the earth somehow becomes a knew form due to the weather or climate do we change the map to make it exactly how it looks every second or would we not be able to do that? Today we had also learned about longitude and latitude. Longitude is the areas on the north and South Pole. latitude parallels are to the equator and at the right angles. Maps aren't the most perfect drawn thing. They aren't even close to being perfect. So yes we should use these for where to go but not all of them are accurate which makes it not so easy to find the right one to use.

cartographers video on maps !
The points described in the cartographers I believe they are strong valid points. Watching this video they are trying to show us that changing the map would make it more understandable because not everything is the same now as it was in 1569. By changing the map it will show the actual struggles of how it is to travel to that place because for instance on the map Greenland appears to be the same size as Africa. This is wrong Africa is actually 14x larger than Greenland. Another point they made is that "nothing is where you think it is" this is a great answer because its honestly not all the maps have different pictures until they flipped the map among it upside down. A great quote that had been brought up was from the social studies argued that "we unconsciously equate size with importance and even power". I do believe this could be true a specially about the whole thing where they said about power. Without realizing or being aware of ones actions is the definition for unconsciously which helps us better understand what the sentence is trying to say. For example we take the size of Africa and make It seem like it is the same size as Greenland when really its not. Today we also have better technology to give us specific measurements and lengths of things so keeping a map that its wrong for another few years could mess things up for us in a long run. I really do agree with the points they are trying to make in this video. Changing the Maputo latest version and telling us where things are is a good idea. Flipping the map and showing us another way to look at things can help us better understand where and how we live. It gives us another point of view on maps and the look on life. I believe this is a great way to get your point across and on what your trying to do.

Maps
The Maps change every once in a while when they change names of things or find new places. The area covered on a map depends on its map scale. A map scale can be presented in 3 ways one way is in a ratio or fraction. Distance can be two points between an overlaid on the scale bar or to determine a distance on earths surface. projection is scientific method of transformation locations on a flat map. Spherical shape causes distortion when drawing it on a flat piece of paper. there is 4 types such as 1. shape of an area can be distorted 2. distance between points may become increased or decreased 3. relative size of different areas can be altered 4. direction between 2 points can be distorted. They can also look like mercator, Goode homolosine and Robinson projection. Learning about maps is not my strongest thing. I usually don't understand how to work them thats why I usually use my device to use google maps when I don't know an address or a new area we are driving too. I am excited to learn more about the history of maps because they are updated but some are from along time ago so I wonder how they know when to update and what to add and what not to. Like what would be important to add and what is just extra information.

Day of our first test!!
Today is the first test we took in class. This test was a great challenge to some people who didn't study and who didn't take good notes in class. I believe that next time we have a test I need to take more notes on the actual words such as what he says extra and not so much the exact detail. I liked the quiz and thought it was very well rounded to what we were learning and that it wasn't things from just out of no where. I also enjoyed how the class wanted each other to do good and was respectful while we had others still taking the test. I believe a little more of a guide line such as telling us we had to write out what they meant would have prepared me a tad bit more but I felt very good about my test. Today felt like a good day in class I got just the right amount of sleep so I wasn't tired to take this test and I was wide awake and ready to take it. The questions made sense and were clear on what they were asking which usually I have a problem with understanding the questions. This test wasn't a shocker and I felt very prepared. I used flash cards when I was studying and this made me feel even more prepared being able to answer these questions.

Socrates review!!
Socrates yay! Today we found out we have a test on the socrates notes we have. We have to relate the notes to how our life is. I would use the essay which was called " a message to Garcia". Excellence is the key about all of the notes we are taking in class. Having excellence has to do with not being a jerk or an idiot. Doing the right thing and doing things with out getting asked or told to do it is making an excellence. Being told to do something takes extra words instead of just doing its like nikes modo is to just do it. When you aren't told to do something and you just do it that makes you a more prepared and organized. It also sets you up for life and when you are trying to get a job and your boss needs you to do something you just do it and if you don't thats what makes you lose your job! Being in the big world if you don't end up doing it you can lose a lot such as jobs, money, friends, respect and more. Basically everything you do should end up being in excellence.

Today is a new of excellence!! Socrates was charged with two crimes due to his opinion of his thoughts. The first crime was corruption of Athens you and second was impiety which is not beliveing in the gods of state. He had a great defense he had said stating " It's my job to be a fly to the lazy sluggish horse that is Athens" Also " I should actually be rewarded with free dinners for life." Basically a jury of 500 male citizens found him guilty (279-221) was the amount that believes him. He had been sentenced to death by drinking poison hemlock. People tried to save him and get him out so he could live but he believed that he wouldn't have done his job if he was saved and actually didn't get the point across that what you believe is what you should stand for. He wanted to make it clear that he was going to die by getting his point across. This made it extra clear of his loyalty to the people and supporting other options and ideas. An idiot in Athens democracy was someone who was self centered almost exclusively with private as apposed to public affairs and making them not as bad as a person. In Athens another thing was that they were born and citizens were made through education. Socrates just wanted to give teens the chance to experience other thoughts out there other than what they had to know and be taught to give them another opportunity to seek a life and another idea of a god or person. Socrates never said he didn't do it so that he could take control over what happened to him and how he was being punished was fair but not being able to thin in another mind set wasn't fair to these kids and thats the mind set he tried to get across and until he would have to die a slow death for even doing it.

In today's class we had went over a few vocabulary words and what they mean. We also went over meaning of things and how they relate to our daily life style and how we work as a government. We also talked about the different kinds of governments and what makes a good and or bad government. The stronger the government the more you draw people to want to stay and or not leave. People want a government where they are protected and they have a fair amount in say on what happens in the country. A good strong democracy causes bigger wealth. The more participation and focus you have the stronger the democracy the government will have. An important word that was discussed was polis which means political entities ruled by their bodies of citizens. Origin of the words politics, metropolitan, poll. A metropolitan is a big city. The importance of the year 508 BC to the ancient Greeks was so big do to a huge success on people. This was the first time in recorded history that people had revolted against their ruler! This hadn't been done ever and was a huge thing for the Greeks. Also since then United sates(1789) blog with other very important States. These were some key notes today during class.

Today in class we had went over what a "letter to Garcia" really means. This was titled the Excellence and with that we had went over every detail. Essay was published as inspirational essay and had sold 40 million copies. This was also translated into 37 languages and made into a movie twice. The essay went all around the world used in many different scenarios it had became a popular slang expression which is still used in the military. During the Spanish American war was when this had been written. I learned that a perihelion is the point when a planet like mars is closest to the sun and therefore it will be at it's brightest time. In the essay they describe one of the important people as someone who stands out like an perihelion. Everyone is basically slipshod and doesn't care about doing any type of work. Which this essay describes everything about how lazy we are and how we have to work hard and not be so imbecility. Working hard is what you need to be a successful and well being of a person. Basically is what Garcia was trying to tell us. President McKinley was the 25th president (1897-1901) assassinated six months into his second term by an anarchist. Learning what an anarchist is really helped me better understand that it is basicaly a no rules government. Also the tallest mountain in North America was (re) named for him until about 2015 and then it was back to its original name Denali. They also called this is also called a missive. This is basically telling us not to be lazy and to always try our hardest on things.

Today we talked about a man named Elbert Hubbard. This man was very important because of a famous essay he had written called "A message to Garcia". This message was very powerful and was used all around the world. It is very personal to me because it reminds me of my brother. In fact, my brother could easily take the place of Rowan in this essay. MY brother Austin, is 18 years old and has autism. Some people would look at this as a disability but really it's a gift. My brother does everything that is asked of him without ever asking what is in it for him or how he may benefit from it. He helps my mom with chores around the house, does them from start to finish, to the best of his ability and has never once told her no. He goes to work everyday on a farm by our house and never complains or misses a day. We pick him up, he's covered in dirt and sweat and that is on a good day and if you ask him how it was he will give you the same answer, "Good". Austin comes right in from school sits down and gets right to work on his homework. He never asks for help or procrastinates because he doesn't want to do it. All of his homework is done neatly and is always turned in on time. My brother is a great example of what it means to take a message to Garcia.

Hi I am Ava Eckley and I'm sharing my Days at the John Carroll school!
Today was my first day at John Carroll school. This day was very exciting and and scary for me in many different way's. All the students and faculty here are very nice and encouraging. I am very excited to be around other student that want to learn and be successful like me. I am planning on going to a great college and I am hoping John Carroll can get me there.
I was very excited to learn and become more prepared for life. I was also so scared because I had gotten lost, went into the wrong class which made a huge scene and made me barely on time. This made me nervous that the teacher would think I am not good at being on time. I am so ready for the new year to begin. My goals are to keep my grades up and be able to play all three sports through my years at the school.
My day at John Carroll school was a great experience and can't wait to go back for more great days.

Review for the finals...
Today in class we had revived for our final which is Friday for my class. I really have been struggling to keep my grade at a decent average...
