Today we talked about a man named Elbert Hubbard. This man was very important because of a famous essay he had written called "A message to Garcia". This message was very powerful and was used all around the world. It is very personal to me because it reminds me of my brother. In fact, my brother could easily take the place of Rowan in this essay. MY brother Austin, is 18 years old and has autism. Some people would look at this as a disability but really it's a gift. My brother does everything that is asked of him without ever asking what is in it for him or how he may benefit from it. He helps my mom with chores around the house, does them from start to finish, to the best of his ability and has never once told her no. He goes to work everyday on a farm by our house and never complains or misses a day. We pick him up, he's covered in dirt and sweat and that is on a good day and if you ask him how it was he will give you the same answer, "Good".  Austin comes right in from school sits down and gets right to work on his homework. He never asks for help or procrastinates because he doesn't want to do it. All of his homework is done neatly and is always turned in on time. My brother is a great example of what it means to take a message to Garcia.

  1. Wow, Ava. I like when you guys can make connections between what you're learning and your real life. But your story about Austin is just amazing. You're lucky to have a big brother you can look up to, but he is lucky to have a sister who admires and appreciates him so much. Thank you for sharing your story!
